We all have been stunned by shonen storylines at least once in our lives and Demon Slayer is one such anime that has always managed to live upto our expectations and it still feels refreshing with every possible element of the shonen genre beautifully imbibed in the story.

Adapted from the manga series by Koyoharu Gotoge, the show follows the story of a young boy named Tanjiro Kamado who becomes a demon slayer after his family is slaughtered by a demon named Muzan Kibutsuji. He has turned his younger sister, Nezuko, into a demon and the show follows Tanjiro’s quest of saving his sister. There is a lot of talk around its animation and yes, it is breathtakingly beautiful but is there more behind this hype? Despite having a typical shonen storyline, Demon Slayer still stands apart and here’s why you too should give it a watch. 

Here are some reasons why Demon Slayer stands apart with its approach:

Engaging Characters – Yes, we like to see ocean-depth characters once in a while and to be honest Demon Slayer doesn’t give us that. We don’t even get to look into the personal philosophy of some major characters but we don’t even need to. The protagonists of the show don’t have much depth but they don’t need that as they fit well where they are needed to. The show manages to emotionally connect with its audience, it makes them feel things on certain points and that’s what it intends to do but that doesn’t mean that these characters are one dimensional. Each one of them is well-developed and adds a certain level of depth to the story. They all have their own unique motivations and struggles, making them more than just one-dimensional stereotypical shonen characters. 

Emotional Storyline – While Demon Slayer may seem like just another action-packed anime at first glance, it is also a deeply emotional and thought-provoking story. The show explores themes of grief, loss, and trauma, as Tanjiro and Nezuko grapple with the aftermath of their family’s murder. Their journey to become demon slayers is a difficult and painful one, but it is also filled with moments of hope and triumph. It is not one of those stories where things are painted either black or white instead the show rather explores the color gray. By showing the sides of Demons as well, the show manages to support its belief that nobody is born with hatred and it’s their circumstances that make them do things. When we came across the duo of Daki and Gyutaro, we couldn’t help but hate them for their characters unless we got to see their side of the story. The show is filled with such moments that make you emotional and question things. 

Stunning animation and soundtrack – 

While the manga was already popular among anime fans, it was the animation of the show that got it popular globally and the studio, Ufotable deserves a credit for that. One of the standout features of Demon Slayer is its stunning animation. The show features incredibly detailed and dynamic visuals, from the lush backgrounds to the intricate fight scenes. Ufotable has a reputation for producing visually stunning anime, and Demon Slayer is no exception. The attention to detail in each frame is truly impressive, and the show’s use of color and lighting creates a moody and immersive atmosphere. These fight sequences are uniquely planned and done. Most of the time, we see people fighting one on one but this show did a great job in bringing team effort in its fight scenes. The show’s emotional impact is enhanced by its beautiful soundtrack, which features haunting melodies and epic orchestral pieces which only add up to our screen experience.

The previous point has led us to acknowledge the beautiful fight sequences this show has. Of course, it wouldn’t be a shonen anime without some thrilling fight scenes, and Demon Slayer delivers on that front as well. The battles between the demon slayers and their foes are intense and exciting, with each character showcasing their unique abilities and strategies. The show’s use of special effects and camera angles adds to the excitement, making it a thrilling watch for action fans.

Cultural Significance – 

Demon Slayer likes to bring up the traditional Japanese culture in the story whenever it gets the chance. It has also gained cultural significance in Japan and around the world. The series has helped to boost tourism in the areas of Japan where it takes place, and it has also sparked a renewed interest in traditional Japanese culture, such as the art of sword-making.
